Questa Introduzione di Widmar mette a fuoco la ricca complessità dei rapporti che Antonio Labriola stabilì nel corso della sua attività scientifica e politica. Secondo Widmar, Labriola mostrò sempre una grande attenzione agli eventi politici del suo tempo, alla costruzione di quelle organizzazioni politiche (in Italia e all'estero) che dovevano promuovere l'emancipazione dei lavoratori e il miglioramento delle loro condizioni materiali. Tuttavia, come sottolinea Widmar, l'apporto maggiore di Labriola si realizza su un diverso piano: 1) la convinta affermazione della centralità dell'approccio marxiano nell'analisi del capitalismo moderno; 2) Il ruolo scientifico e innovativo rappresentato dal materialismo storico, soprattutto se comparato ad altri approcci scientifici (idealismo e positivismo); 3) la missione svolta da Labriola per la diffusione e divulgazione del pensiero di Marx e di Engels – attraverso saggi scientifici, «articoli, … opuscoli, e conferenze» – non soltanto a livello accademico, ma anche popolare.<<>>Widmar's contribution is focused on the richness of the relationships that characterizes the scientific and political activities of Antonio Labriola. According to Widmar, Labriola always showed a great interest in the political events of his time and in the building of political organizations (in Italy and abroad) which could promote the emancipation of the workers and the improvement of their material conditions. However, as Widmar points out, Labriola's prevalent commitments were realized on other levels: 1. the emphasis on the importance of Marx's approach for the analysis of modern capitalism; 2. the role of scientific innovation represented by historical materialism, especially in comparison with the other scientific approaches (Idealism and Positivism); 3. his commitment to disseminating the thought of Marx and Engels – through scientific essays, «articles, ... pamphlets and conferences» – not only at the academic level, but also at the popular level.
