Uno spazio per città medie e “micropoli”. Il caso della Calabria

Il sistema insediativo calabrese viene studiato seguendo il percorso delle trasformazioni che, ieri come oggi, guidano il mutamento sociale e politico del territorio regionale con riferimento a quanto intervenuto nell’urbanizzazione, nell’abbandono delle aree interne e delle campagne, ma anche nei mutamenti del sistema infrastrutturale e delle attività produttive. L’analisi si inquadra all’interno degli scenari economici e sociali che interessano le modificazioni di lungo periodo dello spazio economico regionale rivolgendo particolare attenzione alla configurazione di una nuova maglia urbano-territoriale in cui alcuni centri secondari e minori, pur non esprimendo grande connessione al loro interno, si pongono come timidi presìdi territoriali di servizi in grado di offrire nuove opportunità per il futuro assetto urbano. La modernizzazione dello spazio viene indagata, pertanto, attraverso la nuova articolazione della trama urbana della Calabria che individua in un discreto numero di centri i punti di forza per ridefinire il territorio regionale mediante servizi e funzioni in grado di favorire lo sviluppo e l’integrazione territoriale anche attraverso il miglioramento del sistema dei trasporti ed il nuovo ruolo delle attività economiche e dei settori innovativi.

In this paper, we studied the settlement system of the Calabria Region by following the path of the transformations which lead to the social and political change of the region with reference to what occurred in urbanization, in the abandonment of inland areas and countryside, but also in the changes in the infrastructure systems and in the productive activities. The analysis sets within the economic and social scenarios which affect the long-term changes of the regional economic space focusing on the configuration of a new urban-territorial mesh in which some secondary and minor centers, while not greatly connected inside, are shy territorial garrisons of services likely to offer new opportunities for the future urban planning. The modernization of the space is investigated, therefore, through the new articulation of the urban fabric of the Calabria Region which identifies a fair number of centers which could represent the strengths on which it would be possible to redefine the regional space by means of services and functions that support the development and the integration of the area through both the improvement of the transport system and the new role of the economic activities and of the innovative sectors.
