Alla luce di un ritorno di interesse per la storia delle piccole e medie imprese e nel solco di una tradizione di studi sul ruolo delle élites economiche meridionali tra Ottocento e Novecento, il contributo ricostruisce la travagliata vicenda del Calzaturificio "Alfredo Gidiuli" a Lecce. Il caso di studio risulta interessante per le dinamiche che ne hanno accompagnato l'accelerata trasformazione da laboratorio artigianale a «realtà industriale» nei primi anni del dopoguerra e per l'altrettanto rapida débâcle tra la metà degli anni Venti e gli anni Trenta. La breve esperienza del calzaturificio non è solo la storia di un fallimento, ma diviene il racconto del percorso di ascesa di una borghesia imprenditoriale in formazione, che coniuga l'iniziativa individuale con un progetto più generale pensato per l'intera comunità.

In the light of a resurgence of interest in the history of small and medium-sized enterprises and in the wake of a tradition of studies on southern economic elites between the 19th and 20th centuries, the essay reconstructs the troubled affair of "Calzaturificio Alfredo Gidiuli" in Lecce. The case study is interesting for the dynamics that accompanied the accelerated transformation from craft workshop to "industrial reality" in the early post-war years and the equally rapid failure between the mid-1920s and the 1930s. The shoe factory's brief experience is not just the story of a failure. It becomes the tale of the climbing entrepreneurial bourgeoisie, combining individual initiative with a more general project designed for the entire community.
