L’interpretazione della storia d’Italia data da Nello Rosselli non risentì del mito, assai radicato nella cultura antifascista come in quella fascista, del «Risorgimento quale rivoluzione fallita». Un mito che finì per affascinare tanti autori fra i quali in particolare anche l’amico Piero Gobetti. Rosselli non accettò passivamente nemmeno l'altra idea dominante, quella dell’«Italietta liberale» incapace di assurgere e progredire nel quadro delle nazioni europee. Il saggio, ripercorrendo la formazione di Rosselli, e analizzando il suo legame con Gaetano Salvemini, mostra come il giovane storico fiorentino, pur restando sempre legato alla lezione del maestro, avesse aperto nuove e originali piste di ricerca, mostrandosi sempre più critico di fronte alle interpretazioni della storia italiana, così contigue alle ideologie e alla lotta politica.

Nello Rosselli’s interpretation of Italy’s history was not influenced by the myth of the «Risorgimento as a failed revolution». The myth, which was quite deeply-rooted in antifascist as well as fascist culture, fascinated many authors, among them particularly his friend Piero Gobetti. However, Rosselli didn’t even passively accept the other predominant idea of an «Italietta liberale», which was said to be incapable to rise and progress among the European nations. Retracing Rosselli’s formation and analyzing his ties with Gaetano Salvemini, the essay reveals how the young Florentine historian opened new and original tracks of research, while remaining bound to his teacher’s doctrine. However, Rosselli became ever more critical of interpretations of Italian history that were increasingly ideological and embedded within the political battle.
