Arbutus unedo, una pianta mediterranea molto utile


Abstract


En
Arbute-tree (Arbutus unedo) is a mediterranean plant, representing on of the commonest plants of thle southern part of the Yugoslav coastal area. This woodland plant covers very vast areas especially those which are not suitable for any exploitation or agricultural plantation, because these areas are exclusively calcareous.This plant covers the limestoned areas of the coastal region from Cavtat to Budva as well as some of the southern islands. Arbute-tree covers about 80% of these zones. The estimation of his production on these adriatic areas near the coast surpasses the 2000 tons a year, of which about 500 are used mainly for branldy production. The main characteristics of Arbute-tree are: 1. It is an evergreen and very decorative woodland arboreal plant 4-5 m. height. 2. The fruit of the plant is very plentiful without tilling and disregarding weather conditions during the year. 3. It is the most resistant subtropical plant to agriecological and biotical factors. 4. The exterior part of the fruit is red. The flesh is yallow and his average weight is about 5 gr. 5. The fruit content is composed of 25-28% dry stuff and the selected ecotypes surpass 35%. The fruit also have 250-300 mg. of vitamin C and the selected ecotypes over 400 mg. 6. The plant multiplias very rapidly and is a deeprooted one, with very strong branches even on rocky regions. 7. Arbute-tree is the most suitable plant for the afforestation of the coastal limestoned areas. It also represent an excellent and cheap raw material for industrial processing especially for alcoholic and non intoxicant drink, marmelade and alike products.
