Il 'viaggio' della metafora è inteso in duplice senso: 1) il viaggio della metafora come figura retorica; 2) il viaggio della metafora nel tempo, sino ai nostri giorni. Per quanto riguarda il primo aspetto, si osserva che Aristotele mutua il significato di μεταφορά da quello originario di «trasporto»; quindi la metafora originariamente indica il «trasporto» di un significato da un termine ad un altro ad esso affine. Tuttavia Aristotele sottolinea anche un altro dato importante di questa figura: la metafora come fonte di conoscenza. Per quanto riguarda il secondo aspetto si esamina come la metafora sia presente nel discorso contemporaneo, nel linguaggio ordinario e in quello giornalistico, e si danno numerosi esempi tratti da articoli di giornali su argomenti diversi come sport e politica. Se ne deduce che la metafora non è ornamento del discorso, ma la manifestazione di un modo di pensare per immagini, come sostengono G. Vico, P. M. Bertinetto e M. Black.

The 'journey' of the metaphor is understood in two ways: 1) the journey of metaphor as a rhetorical figure; 2) the journey of metaphor over time, up to our days. As regards the first aspect, it is observed that Aristotle derives the meaning of μεταφορά from the original one of «transport»; therefore the metaphor originally indicates the «transport» of a meaning from one term to another related to it. However Aristotle also underlines another important feature of this figure: the metaphor as a source of knowledge. As regards the second aspect, it is examined how the metaphor is present in contemporary speach, in ordinary language and in journalism, and numerous examples are taken from newspaper articles on different subjects such as sport and politics. It can be deduced that the metaphor is not a speach ornament, but the manifestation of a way of thinking through images, as claimed by G. Vico, P. M. Bertinetto and M. Black.
