As for the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy, also for the centenary of the Great War it was more appropriate to commemorate instead of celebrate, without thwarting the sacrifice of the Fighters, to whom the undying gratitude of the Nation belongs. The Salento area has mobilized all its institutions in the national spirit with a series of events, some of which very important, although of an extemporary and occasional nature, as is the case for every anniversary. With the disappearance of the last witnesses, only the archives are able to provide heuristic answers. For this reason, it is necessary to reorganize and made them available to scholars and researchers, as has unfortunately not always been the case up to now.

Come già per il Centocinquantenario dell'Unità d'Italia, anche per il Centenario della Grande Guerra è stato più opportuno commemorare invece di celebrare, senza vanificare il sacrificio dei Combattenti, ai quali spetta la riconoscenza imperitura della Nazione. Il Salento ha mobilitato tutte le sue istituzioni nello spirito nazionale con una serie di eventi, alcuni anche molto importanti, sebbene dal carattere estemporaneo e occasionale, come del resto per ogni anniversario. Con la scomparsa degli ultimi testimoni ora sono solo gli archivi a dover dare risposte euristiche. Per questo è necessario che questi vengano riordinati e resi fruibili a studiosi e ricercatori, come finora, purtroppo, non sempre è stato.
