Abstract


By early 1967, security in the Mediterranean region was a matter of serious concern to the Johnson Administration. This was partly a consequence of the increased Soviet naval presence and most of all of Moscow’s political activities in some parts of North Africa and the Middle East. Mainly based on unpublished records, this essay describes the United States’ action to overcome the problem that ultimately resulted in the activation of the NATO Naval On Call Force in the Mediterranean
