Tra cielo, terra e mare: topografie simboliche del sacro nel Salento ionico meridionale
Abstract
This article offers a synthesis of several epistemological approaches to the study of the sacred landscape of the Ionian Lower Salento (Apulia). In this area, rural sanctuaries - especially those located on hilltops - constitute a distinctive feature of the sacred landscape. This article seeks to explain their origins and functions. It also examines several sanctuaries situated along the pilgrimage route that led from Gallipoli to Leuca. In conclusion, the article offers a phenomenological and symbolic interpretation of the sacred landscape of the Lower Salento.
