Le metafore del male: reframe Covid

The use of war metaphors to describe the Covid-19 pandemic has aroused great perplexity both among scholars and journalists. The emphasis was placed on the appropriateness of using different metaphors metaphors to describe the effort to contain and eradicate the disease. However, the history of epidemics and the medical treatises related to them, which are retraced in this paper, have often seen the use of war metaphors, because wars have often accompanied or preceded plagues. In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, the use of war metaphors was essentially reserved not so much for the war that the virus wages on humans, as for the war that humans wage against the virus.

L'uso delle metafore belliche per descrivere la pandemia di Covid-19 è stato al centro di numerosi dibattiti e ha suscitato forti perplessità tanto tra gli studiosi, quanto tra i giornalisti. Da più parti si è posto l'accento sull'opportunità di ricorrere ad altre metafore per descrivere lo sforzo che si stava compiendo per limitare e sconfiggere il morbo. La storia delle epidemie e i trattati medici ad esse legate, che vengono richiamati in questo contributo, tuttavia, hanno visto spesso il ricorso a tali metafore, proprio in ragione del fatto che spesso le guerre hanno accompagnato o precedute le pestilenze. Nel contesto del Covid-19 l'uso delle metafore belliche nei tempi della pandemia è stato essenzialmente riservato non tanto alla guerra che il virus muove all'uomo, quanto alla guerra che l'uomo muove al virus.
